Sacristies of New York: Textile Treasures of the Episcopal Church

Symbolism and Technique

Distinctive vestments and paraments have played an essential role in religious services going back thousands of years. The Episcopal Church has an especially rich history of their use from ancient medieval Opus Anglicanum [English Work] embroideries to contemporary creations by fabric artists using computer generated designs.

Marianna Garthwaite Klaiman [sacristiesofny.com] has been studying ecclesiastical textiles since she was a small child peering into the vestment drawers while her mother served on the altar guild of their church. For over 30 years she has been an Associate of the Community of St. John Baptist, a community of Episcopal nuns, whose comprehensive collection of ecclesiastical textiles she has been caring for and documenting.

Sacristies of New York: Textile Treasures of the Episcopal Church is a multi-faceted research project that she has created that will open the doors, drawers and cabinets to the “sacra” or holy places where these articles of devotion and skill are created, stored and cared for. This project will result in a handsomely illustrated book, an exhibition and a comprehensive website containing a searchable database of ecclesiastical textile collections throughout the state of New York. More information is available on the project website, www.sacristiesofny.com.

Using examples from churches and collections she has visited, her two-part program for the ECVA will first explore Christian symbolism used on vestments followed by a program discussing the various techniques employed to create these sacred works of art.

Anyone who appreciates objects created to convey the message of faith will find an abundance of information and inspiration.
